The family of Etta Prouty (nee Henrietta Shanks) sadly announce the passing of a loving and caring Mother, Gram, Aunt, Sister and Friend on October 11, 2022.

Etta was born in Fort William, Ontario on April 7, 1929, eldest daughter of seven children to James and Christina Shanks.  She was married to the late Arthur Prouty.  They had two sons and two daughters.  Bruce (Kin) of Etobicoke, Brenda, Heather (Sandy) Niskanen, of Atikokan, and Robert (Wendy), of Oro Medonte.

Etta will be so sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her six grandchildren, Marlys (Chris), Keeler (Dayna), Tanner (Caleigh), Jessie, Jack, and Shannon and her three great-grandchildren, Matteo, Vera and Iyla.

Also surviving is her sister-in-law Vi Shanks and numerous nieces and nephews.

Etta was predeceased by her parents James and Christina, her husband Arthur (August 12, 1999), sister Norma Barnsley (Vancouver), brother James Shanks (Norma), sister Nancy Latimer (Jack-St. Catharines), brothers Hector, Bill (Helen) and Donnie.  Also, mother and father-in-law, Alice and Clarence, and brother-in-law Herbert (Esther).

Etta attended local and Vocational schools, working for Bryan’s Department Store in the summers.  She went onto work in the Assessment Department of the City Hall after attending the Ontario Business College.  Bowling and playing bridge were some of Etta’s favourite past times in her younger days.  Etta was a member of the Kiwanis Ladies Club and a long-time member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.  Etta and Art enjoyed the summers at Oliver Lake and eventually made Neebing, Ontario their permanent residence.  Etta was always entertained by the shenanigans of the bonfire stories and shared good times with family and friends at the lake.  Winters were spent with friends in Fort Myers, Florida.

Her children and their families were the center of her life.  She was very appreciative of their accomplishments and attended as many events with them as she could.  Her greatest pride and joy and achievement are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   Her family all carry great memories, life lessons and words of wisdom with them.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in the chapel of Jenkens Funeral Home on Friday October 21, 2022 at 12 noon.  Officiated by Reverend Joyce Yanishewski.  Visitation will begin at 11am.  A reception will follow the service at The Columbus Centre.  A private family interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers and expressions of your sympathy, donations to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or to The Salvation Army would be appreciated.

The memorial service will be livestreamed starting at 12pm.  If you wish to view the service, please go to www.jenkensfuneral.ca, where online condolences may be left as well.
