The family of Henry Saarinen are heartbroken to announce his sudden passing on July 2, 2022, at his favourite place on the shores of the lake he knew, loved, and respected, his camp at Silver Islet.

Henry was born on May 3, 1945, in Helsinki, Finland, and came to Canada at the age of 5. He spent his working career at Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. After his retirement, Henry continued to fill his days with projects. Whether it be renovating their homes, helping his family and friends, or the many projects at their beautiful camp, he was never one to shy away from hard work. He was always willing to step in to help anyone, never asking for anything in return.

Henry always loved the adventure of travel, sharing with his wife Lucy many trips to Europe, Hawaii, and Florida, and treks to England and beyond with his son Cory, where he was always willing to try new places, new foods, and new craft beers. In frequent trips to Winnipeg, Henry made many happy memories with his son Scott, daughter-in-law Kayla, and the joy of his life, granddaughter Mira.

Over the last couple of years, everyone knew where to find Henry – by the lake at Silver Islet. Henry loved being near the water; from their early home he built at Gravel River, to their beautiful new place at Silver Islet, Henry’s love of Lake Superior remained strong.

Henry will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 50 years, Lucy, his son Scott (Kayla) (Winnipeg), and Cory (Cambridge, England), his beloved granddaughter Mira, and Gaia. Also left remembering the wonderful times shared together are his sisters and brothers-in-law Adriana and Gus (Christina) Foresto, Judy and Laurie (Alex, Drew, Laura, Matt) Pudas, Sandra and Jeff (Erika, Scott, Luke, Monique, Rya) Freund, and Lori and Lenny (Karlee, Erik, Rowyn, Lindsey, Dillon) Gutmann, and special friends Donna & Bugs Daniw and Brenda and Bill Match.
Henry was predeceased by his parents, Armas and Helmi Saarinen and his in-laws Tony & Ida Fiorido.

The family of Henry would like to thank the Shuniah emergency response team, and all of those who came to help at Silver Islet.

Following Henry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, donations to the Our Hearts at Home Cardiovascular Campaign (TBRHSC) would be greatly appreciated to help us honour the memory of Henry.
