At the age of 96, Herman passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 3, 2024. Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on August 15, 1927.  He married the love of his life Everdina (Diny) Jacobs in September of 1952.  Herman went to nautical school and graduated working his way up to the rank of Captain.  He sailed for months at a time across the world spending much of his time in the Suez Canal, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Herman and Diny were blessed with 2 children, Willy (Wilhelmina) and Jack (Jacob).  In April 1961, they immigrated to Thunder Bay and became members of the First Christian Reformed Church.  Herman became a Ship’s Agent at Keefer Terminal so that he could spend more time with his family.  He was predeceased by his wife, Diny, in 2016, as well as many relatives in the Netherlands, including parents, in-laws and siblings.  Left to mourn his passing are daughter Willy and son Jack, eight grandchildren - Cara, Alicia, Crissy, Deanna, Justin, Johnathon, Jason, and Jeffrey, as well as six great grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday June 9th, 2024 from 3 pm to 5 pm at the First Christian Reformed Church (Hwy 130 / Arthur Street).  On Monday June 10th, 2024 family and friends may gather at the First Christian Reformed Church at 10:45 am and proceed to Sunset Memorial Gardens for the burial service.  Afterwards a church service will be conducted at 12:30 pm at the First Christian Reformed Church by Pastor Matthew Guichelaar followed by a light luncheon.  In lieu of flowers, charitable donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
