John Lester Palo, known affectionately as Papa John, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the age of 76 with his family at his side.

John, a resident of Regent Street, was born January 1st, 1948, in Fort William and was raised in Suomi.

John was a cherished member of the community and loved dearly by family and friends.

John was a cement finisher by trade. He spent many years providing quality concrete work in Thunder Bay, including foundations, slabs, retaining walls, house jacking, and more. John also spent much of his working career building and installing playground equipment in numerous communities around Thunder Bay.  

John was married to his beloved wife, Lois, and together, they raised two boys: Shawn (Deborah), Jay (Michelle). John's love also extended to his daughter Lori and son Johnny. John was a devoted husband and father, and his family was always an important part of his life.

John enjoyed working with his hands. He had an extensive collection of tools and could build just about anything. He enjoyed building many things in his spare time, such as wishing wells which he gave to friends, family, and neighbors.

John’s favourite drink was the occasional vodka with Pepsi, and he was known by all to be a very generous tipper. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed the outdoors.

John was known for his quick wit and great sense of humor. Always telling jokes and making people laugh. His culinary skills were legendary, regularly preparing delicious meals for his family and friends. His homemade Finnish pancakes were second to none.

John also cherished the time spent teaching his grandchildren to fish, hunt, and camp at the family's cabin near Whitefish Lake.

John was predeceased by his loving wife, Lois, and son Johnny.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his children and his six grandchildren: TJ, Ashley (Steven), Kendra, Trevor, Nicole, and Emily, as well his great grandchildren: Kailee, Lucas, Aubrey, Makayla, and Lily.

John is also survived by his sister: Margaret; very dear friends: Sam, Brian, Wishie, and numerous others.

As per John’s wishes, no official service was held. However, family and close friends met on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024, to honor John’s life and say goodbye. John’s ashes were buried next to his wife Lois at the Riverside Cemetery.

A portion of his ashes was kept with his family, they will be spread around the family cabin at a later date.

At that time his loved ones will have another opportunity to share memories and celebrate John's life.

John Lester Palo will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. His stories, humor, wisdom, and the warmth of his company will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Autism Ontario.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
