It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Macko, age 81, a longtime resident of Thunder Bay, who peacefully passed away on April 1, 2025.

John grew up in the East End alongside his two brothers. As the eldest, he often took the lead in their many childhood adventures, whether exploring the shores of Lake Superior, navigating their neighborhood, or guiding his Boy Scout troop as their Scout Master.

At 18, John enlisted in the army before beginning his career at the Great Lakes Paper Mill as an oiler. His strong work ethic and dedication led him to a successful career as an ironworker, where he was a proud member of Local Union 759. Over the years, John worked on numerous projects across Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba, eventually serving as the Union President, earning the respect and admiration of his peers.

A true outdoorsman at heart, John was a loyal friend to many and a devoted cat lover. He found solace in nature, spending countless hours in his bus, trailer, boat, or canoe. His passion for the simple joys of life, coupled with his infectious sense of adventure, made him a beloved figure in his community. Whether at social gatherings, strolling down the street, or attending events, John’s presence was always known as he greeted many familiar faces.

John was a devoted husband to Janet and a loving father to his daughters, Angela Zimmer (Chris) and Kristin Dubick. He took immense pride in his grandchildren, Maddy, Siena, and Ava Zimmer, and Calum and Aidan Grady, cherishing countless moments of joy with them. John is also survived by his brother Norman Macko, nephew Larry Macko, and their families, as well as many extended family and friends.

Despite his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease, John faced every challenge with remarkable strength, courage, and an unwavering will to live life to the fullest. His resilience and vibrant spirit will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

A private service will be held for the family. Those wishing to honor John's memory may do so by making a donation to Parkinson Canada at https://www.parkinson.ca or a charity of their choice.

John was a man who truly lived life with passion, laughter, and a heart full of adventure. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
