It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Scaffeo, a resident of Thunder Bay, who left us peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.
John was born in Italy and immigrated to Canada in 1967, bringing with him a rich cultural heritage and an unparalleled work ethic. He worked tirelessly as a baker, a role that allowed him to share his love for food and community. Later, John became a beloved figure in the Thunder Bay business community, owning and operating Midway Cleaners for many years.
Many in Thunder Bay will fondly remember John not just for his professional endeavors but for his exceptional musical talent. As a member of the band New Formula, John’s accordion playing brought joy and smiles to thousands of faces across the city. His music was a testament to his passion for life and his desire to spread happiness wherever he went.
John is lovingly remembered by his spouse, Sylvie D’Ettorre (BEEB), and his children: Daniel Scaffeo and his children Taylor and Braden, and Melissa MacGillivary with her husband Duncan and their children Kainaan, Xavier, and Aislyn, Sylvie Dettorre's children Danielle and Dylan. He is also survived by his sister, Marisa Catanzaro, and her husband Anthony from New Jersey, as well as his brother Tony Scaffeo and spouse Svetlana Rock from Calgary Tony's children, Olivia and Sophia Scaffeo.
John was predeceased by his mother and father Amedeo and Catarina Scaffeo.
John’s legacy of love, music, and dedication to his family and community will forever be cherished. A celebration of John’s life will be held at St. Dominic’s Church on Monday, July 8, 2024, at 2:00pm, where we will gather to honor the memory of a man who touched so many lives. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to service time. Entombment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Northern Cancer Fund a cause that was dear to John’s heart.
