It is with heavy hearts that the family of Jukka (John) Tapio Poystila announce his passing on Friday, July 5, 2024. Born August 1, 1938, in Lammi, Finland. His family immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1953 moving to Kaministiquia.

John and Aila married in May 1964 and started the next limbs on the family tree. As a young family they purchased a parcel of land on Fassina Street where they built our family home. John was a proud employee of Can-Car Rail/ Bombardier for many years, retiring in 2000. A few years prior to his retirement, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He was a humble, gentle husband and father who bore a long and difficult disease with dignity.

John was an avid cross-country skier completing the 50km ski run many times, summers were spent on his bicycle and all year round he walked daily.

In May 2023, John suffered a stroke and entered long-term care at Bethammi Nursing Home. Words cannot convey our thanks to the staff on 2 North who have helped him to remain comfortable during this past year.

John was predeceased by his parents Irma and Sulo, two sisters Rauni and Sirkka, his brother Lars and his grandson Liam.

John is survived by his wife of 60 years Aila, his children Lisa, Roy, Leila (Mark), Hannu and Gary, his grandchildren Kaarina (Kolton), Olivia, Oliver and Leo, his brothers Sulo and Mauri as well as numerous relatives in Canada and Finland.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, in the chapel of Sargent and Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street with Pastor Brian Falkenholt officiating. John will be solely missed but he will forever live on in our hearts. If you wish to make a gesture, please consider donating to Parkinson’s Canada.
