1942 to 2025
The family of June Isabelle Huston are saddened to announce her peaceful passing, just three days after her 83rd birthday, on April 25, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Thunder Bay, with her husband, Tom, by her side.
Born in Port Arthur, Ontario on April 22, 1942 to Mary (Maja) and Soren Nielsen, June was raised in Pass Lake on land that her father homesteaded. From a young age, she assisted with the chores on the family farm, and attended a one-room schoolhouse in Pass Lake before boarding in Thunder Bay to attend Hillcrest High School where she focused on secretarial studies. After graduating, she worked as a legal secretary, and later as a clerk at Sibley Provincial Park.
On July 3, 1965, she married Tom Huston, and together they raised two children, Lisa and Steven, in the home built by her father on the family homestead. June and Tom ran a successful logging operation and heavy equipment construction business.
A gifted cook, June especially enjoyed preparing traditional Danish dishes passed down from her mother. She could always be counted on to donate baking and buns to various events in Pass Lake. She took great pride in her flower gardens, and enjoyed maintaining them. Deeply devoted to preserving the area’s history, she was a founding member of the Pass Lake Historical Society and remained active for 40 years.
June cherished the close bonds she maintained with friends and neighbours. Her friend, Anna Marie Petersen, would come from Denmark and stay each summer.
After retirement, Tom and June enjoyed travelling, with memorable trips to the East Coast, Yukon, Alaska, and Southwestern United States. She also loved her mini shopping trips to Duluth.
Later in life, when she was unable to get out due to health issues, she found joy in her telephone chats with dear friends Aase, Carol, Helga and Karen, and in the local wildlife - especially the “tame” foxes, which were all named.
June faced many struggles with her health. She was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis in midlife, and more recently with lung cancer which sadly metastasized.
June is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Tom, her daughter Lisa (Daryl Brodrick), and her son Steven. She is also survived by numerous cousins in Denmark as well as extended family in Canada. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Soren Nielsen, two infant sisters, and her “Canadian” cousins Mogens Jensen and Carl Nielsen.
The family wishes to extend thanks to Dr. Bezanson, the staff at Bayshore for their support in helping June to remain at home, and during her final days, the nurses on 4 North at St Joseph’s Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no service. A private family internment will be held at a later date. If so desired, a donation to a charity of choice would be greatly appreciated.
