Lillie Buset, age 89 years, passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 8, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital with her family at her side.
She was born Lillie Piccolo on Oct. 15, 1921 in Azzano Decimo, Italy and came to Canada with her parents as a child in 1923 settling in West Fort William. She spent her early years in the family home and during the Second World War she worked as a seamstress on the Spitfire airplane assembly line at Can Car.
After the war, like many other women of her time, she had to give up her job when she married her husband, Aldo Buset, in 1948.
During her marriage she greatly enjoyed her role as Aldo’s wife and mother to her three children Rona, Richard and Lisa, grandmother and babysitter to their children and, more recently, great-grandmother to her three wonderful great-granddaughters.
Lillie is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Aldo Buset, children Rona Doyle (Terry), Richard Buset (Liz McWeeny) and Lisa Frattolin (Desi), grandchildren Kerry Doyle (Jay Inman), Tyler Doyle (Kyla), Kathleen Buset (Jesse Fleming), Jonathan Buset, Leslie Frattolin, Melissa Frattolin and Jennifer Frattolin, great-grandchildren Miriam Fleming, Talia Fleming and Emily Doyle, her sister Dolly Belbas (Mike) and brother Louie Piccolo.
She was predeceased by her parents Maria and Giacomo Piccolo, her brothers Aldo Piccolo, William Piccolo and Sergio Piccolo and her sisters Mary Belluz and Verna Todd. She was a life-long member of St. Agnes Parish and the Catholic Women’s League of the parish, a life member of the Venet Society, Principe di Piemonte Ladies Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ortona Legion (until its closing).
Spending time with her family and extended relatives especially at their Surprise Lake camp as well as regular trips to the Casino were some of her great enjoyments. Lillie was most competitive and loved a good game of bocce or cards.
