Although bent on living, Marc died unexpectedly in hospital on December 6, 2023.

Marc left a lasting imprint on those who knew him. He will be forever missed by siblings and partners Tanya (David), Clea (Eddy), Rhys (Malene), nieces Sascha, Heidi, Finnley and baby nephew Felix along with relatives in Austria and Spain, special people in his life including Rita Martin who listened unconditionally as a family member, Ian Bolduc trusted to be his guardian angel, Dave Bradley longtime friend and fellow coach, Geoff Miller who had a wonderful relationship with Marc at Sherwin Williams as well as Janet, who always believed in him.

Born in Syracuse, New York, to Rainer and Ilse Machold, Marc attended Lakefield College School, Guelph University and Lakehead. He enjoyed many careers but his favourite time was on the slopes skiing and supporting the ski community - whether in Quebec, North Carolina or on the hills of Thunder Bay. Marc coached the Lakehead University Ski Team in the 90’s to a USSA Central Division Championship. Over 40+ years, he helped others to become ski instructors themselves. As recently as last year, he coached racing at Mount Baldy with his friend Dave. In the summer, Marc was an avid tennis player, cyclist and in-line skater. And he could occasionally be seen riding his motorcycle on a weeknight through the beautiful surroundings of Thunder Bay. Marc enjoyed conversing about business, politics, history and simple joys such as, “What makes a good pierogi?”

The family is so grateful to the nurses in Oncology 1A of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for their professional care, attentiveness and genuine understanding that surpassed all. To his team of doctors for pushing forward with cutting edge treatments - thank you.

Marc’s passion for life was extraordinary and inspiring. He always asked about personal experiences beyond work. To Marc’s wider circle of friendships - your outpouring of messages describing Marc as kind, fun, and unique resonate with truth and warmth.

A Celebration of Life to share memories will be announced in the spring of 2024.
