With heavy hearts, the Family of Maria Angela Laudone announces her passing on February 19, 2025 at 2:37am at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. Maria passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, who held her hand until the very end. Born on April 26, 1948, In Acri Cosenza, Italy, she was the daughter of Angelo and Domenica Garofalo and grew up alongside her eight siblings.
Maria was a gentle, kind soul, always willing to do anything for those she loved. She was a devoted mother to her three children, Carmela Laudone (Marc), Frank Laudone, and Domenica Gvora (Kevin), and a beloved Nona to her precious granddaughters, Alexa Gvora and Alyssa Gvora.
Maria’s cooking was legendary; she had the gift of making everything she prepared taste extraordinary. Homemade bread, tomato sauce, sausages, and wine were among her specialties, and she loved nothing more than making these treats with her family.
Maria came to Canada after meeting her beloved husband, Giuseppe Laudone, whom she cherished deeply. Arriving with no knowledge of English, she quickly embraced the challenges of her new life, starting with a job as a cleaner at a movie theatre. She was meticulous and hardworking, just as she was in everything she did.
Maria also had a deep love for gardening, a passion she shared with her husband. Together, they created a beautiful garden that was a testament to their hard work and love of nature.
Maria often reminisced about her life in Italy, and we will dearly miss hearing her beautiful stories. Mom, you will always remain with us in heart, mind and cherished memories. What beautiful memories they are, and we will carry them with us always.
Thank you to the ICU Team and the 2A Nursing Staff for looking after Maria in her final days.
Funeral Mass for Maria will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, officiated by Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla J.V. Visitation will be held one hour prior in the Cathedral. Entombment will follow at St. Andrew’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada would be appreciated.
