In loving memory of Mary Bernier who passed away peacefully on December 25 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Born in Thunder Bay and trained as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Thunder Bay, Mary went on to work as a dedicated nurse at the Chapleau General Hospital. Married to John Joseph Bernier on June 15, 1958, they had one daughter Catherine (Markus).

Mary was a proud Granny of five “Grands”; Laura (Paul), Steven (Justine), Michaela (Patrick), Meagan (Nathan) and Shaylyn and delighted in her seven “Greats”; Lukas, Walter, Ruby, Nathaniel, Eddison, Claire and Adeline. Mary is survived by her brother Patrick John Cooney and her sisters-in-law Carol Cooney and Lise Bernier as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

An active member in the Chapleau community, Mary belonged to the Catholic Women’s League and was an avid crafter, taking pride in sharing patterns and projects with her many good friends and fellow crafters. Mary always found a way to make friends and acquaintances wherever she went. Having a close social circle was important to her. She loved spending her summer seasons at “the camp” on Mulligan’s Bay. It was an anticipated part of the grandkids’ summer to spend a week with their grandparents at camp.

Mary moved to Thunder Bay, a place that always felt like home in July of 2016 to Chartwell Glacier Ridge where she enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.

A private tribute to our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother will take place in the warmth of the springtime.

A special note of thanks to all medical staff that have compassionately cared for mom throughout the years during her health challenges. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Mary’s memory to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre or the Chapleau General Hospital.
