It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nelda Legarde (nee Mendowegan), age 57 years and member of Ginoogaming First Nation, unexpectedly in Thunder Bay on Monday, January 27, 2025.
Nelda was born on October 6, 1967 in Aroland to Margaret (nee Wadow) and Joseph Mendowegan. She enjoyed attending PowWows, playing Bingo and watching her favourite TV shows. Her greatest joy was spending time with family, especially her son, whom she loved so much. Nelda will be dearly missed but her memory will live on in the hearts of family, friends, and community members.
Nelda is survived by her beloved son, Nathaniel Legarde; sisters Roseline (Dennis) Mugaby, Norma Vaillancourt, Merna Mendowegan and brother Basil Mendowegan (Rena) as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Mendowegan; sisters Joann Mendowegan and Beverly McKay as well as numerous other extended family.
Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Family and friends are invited to gather at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Longlac for a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Father Hugo Tremblay. Interment will follow at Longlac Cemetery.
A wake will be held in the Church on Tuesday, February 4, 2024, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm, with a private family viewing to begin at 5:00pm.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the EVEREST - WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, Thunder Bay.
