Peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Peter (Piero) Gallo passed away on May 30, 2024, at the age of 81 years.

Peter was born in the Province of Cosenza in Italy on July 24, 1942 to parents Emilio and Gina Gallo (Sacco). He immigrated to Canada when he was 15 years old to join his father here in Thunder Bay.

Peter’s family was very important to him and he worked hard to support them. He had a very strong work ethic which he passed on to his children. His first job was laying track for the CN Railway around the Kenora area. He then went on to work for Claydon Construction in Thunder Bay. Peter was one of the many construction workers who helped build the Labour Hall on Fort William Road. He also worked for Brayshaw Steel (Great West Steel/China Bros) until they closed. Lastly he worked for Nu-Tech Metals until his retirement in 2005 at age 63. Peter was also a proud member of the Local Steelworkers Union # 397.

Peter was predeceased by his parents Emilio and Gina Gallo and brother-in-law Tony Chiodo in Italy. Also predeceased by his father-in-law Clive Tucker and mother-in-law Margaret Horaski.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Suzanne (Tucker), son Tony and daughter Theresa. Also survived by sister Esilda Chiodo and nephews Santino and Emilio in Italy. Peter is also survived by sister-in-law Rosalind (Kevin) LeBlanc in Sooke, BC and brother-in-law Ross Tucker in Australia. He will also be remembered by the Iachetta family who will have fond memories of the time he spent with them in their home on Crown Street.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on both the 5th and 4th floors of St. Joseph’s Hospital for their excellent and compassionate care of Peter while he was in the hospital. Special and sincere thanks to Dr. Ward and Dr. Simpson from MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) for their compassionate understanding of Peter’s wishes to leave this life on his own terms.

As per Peter’s wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Huntington Society of Canada to further their research in finding a cure for this debilitating disease.

“Huntington Disease (H.D.) is a debilitating brain disorder that is fatal and incurable. Symptoms include uncontrollable jerking movements and relentless cognitive and emotional impairment.”
