Mr. Richard Egbert Gerard Hulst, age 73 years, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away on December 6, 2023 at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Richard was born to Geertruida Johanna Emillie Hulst (Weise) and Gerard Egbert Hendrick Hulst on September 19, 1950 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
 
In 1965, Richard immigrated to Canada with his parents and four younger siblings. At 16 he left school and took a position as a deckhand with Misener Shipping. By his twenties, he was employed as a 3rd mate with NM Paterson and a 1st mate with Soo River Company. In 1994, he came a captain for Fettes Shipping, his most proud professional achievement. Before retiring, Richard went overseas working for James Fisher and Sons, and became a certified marine surveyor.
 
Richard enjoyed being outdoors, almost always with a canine companion, whether that was camping, fishing, or just puttering around in the yard. He also had a love of computers, science fiction television, and western novels.
 
Richard is survived by his former wife Viola Hulst, daughters Kimberly Hulst and Amanda (James) Stewart, siblings William Hulst, Adrian Hulst, Ronald Hulst & Emillie (Les) Fondeur, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
 
Richard was predeceased by his father Gerard Hulst in 1982 and his mother Geertruida Hulst in 2002.

Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at a later date.
