It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roland John Arthur, who left us peacefully on November 19, 2024, at the age of 89 with his family by his side. Born on January 31, 1935, in Milton, Nova Scotia, Roland spent most of his life in Thunder Bay where he made a lasting impact on his community and family.
Roland began his career first as a sailor and then as an electrician where he contributed to projects such as the historic Alexander Henry icebreaker. He later found his true calling in law enforcement, serving with dedication as a police officer for the CPR Police and the Thunder Bay Police. Over the years, Roland rose through the ranks to become a respected Detective Sergeant, retiring in 1996 after a distinguished career marked by integrity and commitment.
A true outdoorsman, Roland found solace and joy in nature. Fishing was his passion, and his cabin near Nakina was his sanctuary.
Roland will be remembered as a hardworking, kind, and adventurous soul who deeply loved his family, his work, and the wilderness that brought him peace.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Churchill, his sons David (Joanne) and John (Kazuko) and his grandchildren Lauren, Erin, Erika, and Ellena and many friends who cherished his company. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Amy (nee Mansfield) Arthur, his brothers David and Gordon, and his sisters Ruth and Jane.
As per Roland's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private family celebration of his life will be held later. Should friends so desire, donations made to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
Rest easy, Roland. You will forever be in our hearts and memories.
