It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Sara DeCicco on October 1, 2024.  Sara was born in Malito, Cosenza, Italia on April 13, 1937, the daughter of Francesco and Maria Francesca Funari.  She married her best friend and soulmate Geraldo DeCicco on July 14, 1956.  In August of 1958, Sara, her husband and their 3 month old son Mario immigrated to Canada to join Sara’s sister Lisetta Nucci and brother Mario Funari in Madsen Mine near Red Lake, Ontario.  They later moved to Port Arthur, Ontario where Sara and Geraldo raised their 3 children: Mario, Franca and David.  Sara loved her life.  She enjoyed going for walks, swimming, attending social events and spending time with family and friends.  She was very active in her church, loved singing in the choir and was a member of the C.W.L..  Our mom loved children and began babysitting for not only her grandchildren but for other family and friend’s children as well.  She was a very generous and caring person who gave to local charities including Shelter House, for whom she would often make her famous bread.

Sara will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her children: Mario Santo DeCicco, Franca Maria Rowley (Rick) and David DeCicco; grandchildren: Thomas (Joann), Richard (Ana) and Bryan Rowley and Tyler (Nicole) and Alexander DeCicco; great grandchildren: Petunia and Gretchen Rowley, her sister Franca, sister in law Lena DeCicco (deceased Franco DeCicco) who was her dear best friend as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.  She was predeceased by her husband Geraldo, parents Francesco and Maria Francesca Funari, her siblings: Onorina, Filipo, Rosa, Giovanni, Mario, Lisetta and Piera.

The family are truly grateful for the wonderful care and compassion that Sara received and give special thanks to Dr. Ruby Klassen and all of the medical care professionals and support staff at Lakehead Manor and at the TBRHS-Transitional Care Unit.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 when family and friends will gather in St. Dominic’s R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Michael Mahoney.  Those unable to attend in person may do so virtually on the Sargent & Son Facebook page.  Visitation for friends will be held in the church for 1 hour prior to service time.  The interment will take place in St. Andrew’s Cemetery.  As expressions of sympathy memorials to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay would be appreciated. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com
