Shirley Bonazzo (Hrynyk) of Thunder Bay passed away peacefully, in St. Joseph’s Hospice on October 13, 2015, with her family by her side.
Shirley was born in Port Arthur, Ontario to William and Dorthy Hrynyk on August 19, 1951. The youngest of two children, she grew up in Port Arthur on Primrose St. and graduated from Hillcrest High School.
She was well known as a kind, generous person and a beautiful friend to many. She was a great listener, had a giving nature and she wholeheartedly cared about her family and friends, as she always made time to help out friends and family in need. Shirley went on to become a Registered Nursing Assistant, graduating in 1970; she worked at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital in the early 1970’s.
In 1969, she met the love of her life, Edward Bonazzo and they married on July 18, 1970. They owned and operated Ed’s Texaco on Court St. and Shuniah St. She was the bookkeeper for the family business, and also worked in the automotive parts industry for many years.
She enjoyed playing golf, reading, gardening, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Shirley was a dedicated mother. She deeply cherished travelling from Thunder Bay, enjoying all her time away in Henderson, NV with Ed, and also visiting and spending time with Aunty Jean and Uncle Bob in Las Vegas.
Shirley is survived by her children Allan (Renee) Bonazzo, Tina (Drew) Rapoch, and sister Diane Johnston of Thunder Bay; as well as several special cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Shirley is predeceased by her parents, William and Dorthy Hrynyk, as well as her beloved husband, Edward in 2002.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral service for the late Shirley Bonazzo will be held on Tuesday, October 20th, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland St. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hospice (4 North) at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Shirley's name.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the team at TBRHSC Cancer Centre, Dr. Davenport, Dr. Simpson and Dr. Migay. Also, special thanks to all the nurses of 4 North (Hospice) at St. Joe’s, especially Nancy, Sherri and Krista for all your support and kindness.
