On October 20, 2024, after a long-blessed life, at the age of 99, Taimi went to be with her Saviour. Taimi was born in Joutseno, Finland on July 31,1925. She had many challenges in her life, having had to flee the Russian advance twice as a teenage girl in Karelia during World War II. She married Kauko Pölkki in 1944 and they began their life together, after having discovered a transforming relationship with their Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. They began their life in Saunakylä, Finland with four children. In November 1962 they moved to Canada and after a brief stay in Montreal, the family settled in then Port Arthur.

Taimi had various jobs throughout her life but most often could be found behind the counter at the Kangas general store and later serving the patrons of the Kangas sauna. She was a faithful member of the Finnish Free Church (Vapaakirkko) and Saalem Pentecostal Church, serving in the choir and kitchen. She was widowed on October 20, 1985, and for 39 years to the day, touched the lives of family and friends until she was called home.

Taimi is survived by her children, Hannu (Pirkko) Pölkki, Marja (Hannu) Karhunen, Juha (Sirpa) Pölkki, and Peter (Pamela) Pölkki. Her grandchildren, Michael, Roy (Cheryl), Andrew (Susan), Alisa (Kevin), Kristina (Harri), Steven, Johanna (Austin), Susanna (Adam), Markus (Whitney) and Katriina (Tristan); her great-grandchildren, Ariel (Matthew), Alaina, Jaana, Evan, Jared, Jaako (Ashlin), Janika (Daniel) Johannes, Cody (Jenny), Amanda, Kyle, Hannah, Arno, Niko, and her great-great-grandchildren Samu and Luka.

The family of Taimi Pölkki would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the staff of Bethammi Nursing Home for their incredible love, care, and comfort to Taimi in the remaining years of her life. Your gentle touch and compassion were a true blessing for Taimi and her family.

A Celebration of Life for Taimi Pölkki will be held at Saalem Finnish Pentecostal Church – 21 Walkover St. - at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 26th, 2024.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made in Taimi’s name to Saalem Finnish Pentecostal Church of Thunder Bay or the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Thunder Bay.
