It is with great sadness the family announce the peaceful passing of their mother, Mrs. Taimi Terttu Proutt, age 96 years, at St. Joseph’s Hospice on January 28, 2017 with family by her side. She was a resident of Thunder Bay and formerly a long time resident of Nolalu and Devon Township.
Born and raised in Nolalu, Taimi grew up in a large family of 13 siblings, and shared a special bond with her twin sister Toini. In her early years she helped others with childcare, farm and household duties.
She also worked at logging camps until she met Mr. Arvo Luoma who became her partner of many years, and together raised their family, until his passing in 1968. She later met and married Mr. Fred Proutt and they had many years together, until his passing in 1990.
Taimi was a loving devoted mother, kind, caring and a real pleasure to be around. She loved growing beautiful flowers, cooking, baking and crafts, but most of all, sharing time with others.
Taimi is survived by her daughters Helen Ross (John Keller), Lorna (Paul) Daoust, Elaine (Rodney) Kotala, and Joyce (Ken) Warwick; son Brian (Barbara) Luoma; son-in-law Dale Cook; Brother Bob Maenpaa of Sturgeon County, Alberta; along with 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was predeceased by her parents Maria Sofia Rajala and John Maenpaa, husbands Arvo Luoma and Fred Proutt, son Richard Luoma, step-son Asser in Sweden, son-in-law Jack Ross, daughter Eleanor Cook, step-daughter Wilma Ronka, grandsons Robert Daoust and Keith Ross, granddaughter Sharon Streutker, brothers John, Toivo, Onni, Lauri, Toimi, Tauno and half-brother Jack; sisters Vieno, Sylvia, Laura, Toini, and half-sister Ida.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service for Mrs. Proutt’s family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017 beginning at 1:00 p.m. located at the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, with Pastor Chris Fiorito officiating. Visitation for friends and family will take place one hour prior to service time.
A private interment will be held at a later date in Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations made to a charity of choice would be appreciated.
