Thelma Rose Proctor nee Barnard peacefully passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital in Thunder Bay Ontario on November 22, 2024, with family by her side after a 19-month battle with cancer. She is survived by her children Rebecca (George), Tiffany (Nenad), Jana Lea (Gavin), grandson Elliott (Tiffany), brother Donald and sister-in-law Elizabeth, sisters Alice, Laurie, Betty-Lou, Aunt Diane and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Thelma was predeceased by her father Roy, Mother Nora, brothers Ray, Jerry, Larry, and sister Lillian.
Mom was a fighter right from the beginning. She faced her diagnosis head on and as she did with everything in her life, faced it with strength, perseverance and humour until the end. She was known for her smile and ability to walk into any room not knowing a soul and walking away with lifelong friends. She was always optimistic and saw the best in everyone, people from all walks of life. She was never afraid to step up and protect those in need. We have endless stories of mom rescuing both people and animals in distress. Her laugh was infectious and she had the ability to inject humour into any story she told. Mom had many skills and hobbies in her life, one of her favourites was gardening, foraging for medicine and berries and preserving her harvest.
We will always remember mom's dedication to caring for her children, from making sure we had what we needed, being present at our sports and other important events, and taking us on road trips to visit family.
We want to thank the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice for the compassionate care they showed our mom in her final months. We want to thank our Uncle Don and Aunty Elizabeth for taking on the huge role of caregivers to mom through her battle, making sure she was never alone on the good days or the bad. Thank you to the many people who visited mom including Aunty Diane, Aunty Alice, Aunty Betty-Lou and her friend Terri.
As per moms wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, Northern Cancer Fund would be greatly appreciated.
We love you mom.
Mom’s life is held in the memories of all who knew her as a daughter, sister, aunty, niece and friend, so we would love to hear how you knew our mom and encourage you to share a story with us below on the tribute wall.
