Sadly, Walter Pawluk passed away on September 19, 2024, after a brief illness. At 97, Walter lived proudly and independently in his own home up until this past summer.

Born in Winnipeg on February 18, 1927, Walter grew up in Fort William, attending Ogden Street School and Fort William Vocational School. Walt started his career as an accountant with Day Company of Canada before moving to the natural gas industry, where he rose through the ranks. He spent the last 22 years of his career as a regional accounting manager, retiring from Intercity Gas in 1989. Walt was active in sports, playing minor and junior hockey for the Columbus Club, and softball and fastball with various teams in the Big Four League.

Walt married Victoria (Vickie) Ficek on September 21, 1985, instantly gaining two daughters Wendie (Rob) Glougie and Deborah (Muni) Ficek, as well as two grandchildren, Jennifer and Jonathon (Jessica).

Walt and Vickie travelled extensively across North America and Europe but also enjoyed being closer to home. They loved to garden and enjoyed hosting their friends and family for backyard barbecues and dinners. Though longtime members of Redwood Park Church, they enjoyed the camaraderie of the group making perogies at Holy Cross.

Walt will be missed by his stepdaughters and sons-in-law, his grandchildren, his sister-in-law Nellie Pawluk, his nephews Gerry (who devoted his time to care and assist Walt as his needs grew), Donnie, and Gordon, and his niece Cindy. He is reunited with his parents, his sister Jean Nazvesky, his brothers Ed and Bill, his nephews Ken and Glen, his cat Mopsy, and his beloved Vickie.

The family is truly grateful for the wonderful care and compassion Walter received by all his medical care professionals and support staff.

As per Walter’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of life will be held with family at a later date.

Walter loved animals, especially his cat, Mopsy. He was always feeding birds and squirrels. In his memory, please consider a donation to the Thunder Bay District Humane Society or to Cancer research.
