It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bill Winterburn on October 3, 2024 at the Nipigon District Memorial hospital with family by his side.

Bill was born in Lindsey, Ontario on September 1, 1935. He was 1 of 11 children born to Fred & Norma Winterburn.

Bill joined the Armed Forces which landed him on base near Portage la Prairie where he met the love of his life Ina. Together they shared just shy of 70 years together and raised 4 children.

He was a man of many talents and skills building his first home for the family in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Followed by a hand crafted A-Frame family cottage in Wanipigow Lake, Manitoba.

He started his career with TransCanada Pipelines in Portage la Prairie where promotions led him to Nipigon, Ontario where he and his wife built their final log home. Starting with trees they found, cut, peeled and milled themselves on his homemade sawmill. A labour of love together achieved many goals.

Dad’s love of knowledge and skills far exceeded anything we could imagine. He thrived in group settings; be it a family gathering or during his career. He shared his experiences of his travels to Africa and Colombia where he worked as a consultant. He was a man of many words, we always joked that if you asked for the time he would tell you how to build a clock. He loved to recite various poems in our family gatherings.

Bill is survived by loving wife Ina. Children Sherry (Rick) of Winnipeg, Eric (Margaret) of Nipigon, Colin (Nicole) of Belleville, Brenda (Scott) of Nipigon. Brothers Paul (Gwen), Colin and Sisters Linda, Shiela (Chuck). Grandchildren Sharla (Alex), Kerilyn, Sean, Kayla (Ryan), Chad, Shane (Crystal). Great Grandchildren Alexander, Elliot, Henry, Beatrix, Rory, Harper, Emily, and Dylan. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank the caring doctors and nursing staff at the Nipigon Hospital for their support. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital or Parkinson Canada would be greatly appreciated.

A private Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date.
