Zofia “Sophie” Cicigoi (nee Guzik) age 87 years, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, with loving family by her side. Born in the village of Polekarcice, Poland, Sophie’s early years were remembered for being part of a hard working, close, and loving farming family that had to be resilient when dealing with war and hardships.  With the help of her brother, she immigrated to Canada in 1966. She moved to Northern Ontario to work in the bush camps as a server, cleaner, and cook.  It was there that she met, fell in love, and later married Giuseppe Cicigoi on May 4, 1968.

Sophie was a dedicated homemaker who poured her heart and soul into raising and supporting her family, including two boys, creating a warm and loving environment filled with laughter and cherished memories. She extended her care beyond her own household, serving as a trusted babysitter who was loved by many. Later, Sophie joined RM Catering at the Thunder Bay Airport cafeteria, where her hard work, infectious humour, and positive outlook on life brightened the days of coworkers and patrons alike. She formed many lasting friendships always bringing her signature blend of joy and storytelling to every encounter.

Known for her love of life’s simple pleasures, Sophie could often be found enjoying a senior coffee at the Intercity food court, visiting her favorite spots like Safeway, Zellers, McDonald’s, and the bank, or riding the city bus with her characteristic cheer. A talented cook, she delighted her family and friends with her homemade specialties, including lane kluski and perogies, and made every special occasion feel extraordinary. Above all, Sophie was the best sister, wife, mother, grandma, and friend, whose selflessness and love were the cornerstones of her life. Her stories, laughter, listening, and unwavering positivity will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.

Sophie’s greatest love was her family, especially her beautiful grandchildren. Sophie is survived by her sons Tim, Rick (Mary Jo), grandchildren Nicholas, Alyssa, Christian, Alexander, and Samantha.  Nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive in Canada and in Poland.  She was predeceased by her husband Giuseppe, her parents Ludvig and Julianna Guzik, brothers Walter, Stanley, Edward, Ted, sister Celina, and a sibling in infancy.  Visitation with family and friends will take place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with words of remembrance to follow from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Blake Funeral Chapel.  Interment will follow at a later date in Mountain View Cemetery.  If friends desire, memorials to TBRHSC Cancer Care would be appreciated. Special thanks to care givers Dr. Simpson, Dr. Ward, RN Jocelyn, NP Crystal, Home Care including VON nurses esp. Farrah, and PSW’s esp. Maria and Rhonda.  Thank you, Mom, for filling our lives with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
