Falcons shutout Saints in season opener

St. Ignatius rushed for three touchdowns on their way to a 27-0 triumph over St. Patrick.

THUNDER BAY – The St. Ignatius Falcons took full advantage of playing in front of their home fans on Friday afternoon.

The Falcons started off their 2024 Superior Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior football season on a winning note as they beat the St. Patrick Fighting Saints by a score of 27-0 at St. Ignatius High School.

Falcons head coach Jason Moore was happy with how the team played, especially as they implemented some new changes to their playbook.

“We have a customized spread offence now and we’ve walked away from the very congested offence that we had last year,” Moore said.

“We’ve been developing it based on the overall skill set that our players have.”

Falcons quarterback Lucas Dupuis helped his team start rolling offensively with a 40-year touchdown run.

Roberto Cappelli had a pair of short-yardage plunges into the endzone and Daniel Voca kicked two field goals to complete the scoring.

The Saints are still searching for their first win since capturing the city title in 2022.

They played to a 14-14 tie with the Falcons in last year’s season opener before dropping their next five regular season contests and losing a 17-10 semifinal matchup with the Hammarskjold Vikings.

“We’ve got to get better,” Saints head coach Mike Marcon said. “We tackled too high, missed blocks and took bad penalties.

“Fortunately, everyone makes the playoffs and that’s what we’re building towards.”

The Saints return to action at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 against the Westgate Tigers at Fort William Stadium.

The Falcons, who lost a 35-28 affair to the Tigers in last year’s semifinal, start next week’s doubleheader at the Stadium at 5 p.m. against the Vikings.
