Mackenzie Blackwood heading to Colorado

DENVER — Mackenzie Blackwood’s 28th birthday will be one he won’t soon forget.

The goaltender from Thunder Bay was traded by the San Jose Sharks to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.

The Avalanche acquired Blackwood, forward Givani Smith and a fifth-round pick in the 2027 National Hockey League draft in exchange for goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, forward Nikolai Kovalenko, a second-round pick in 2026 and a fifth-round pick in 2025.

Blackwood was in his second season with the Sharks, who had picked him up in a trade with the New Jersey Devils in June 2023.

He had a 6-9-3 record with a 2.95 goals against average, a .910 save percentage and a shutout at the time of Monday’s deal.

His last start with the Sharks came on Saturday as he turned aside 51 shots in a 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers.
