NEW YORK — After 17 seasons in the National Hockey League, Marc Staal is hanging up his skates.

The 37-year-old defenceman from Thunder Bay announced his retirement on Thursday.

He will be joining the New York Rangers, where he spent the majority of his career, as a player development assistant.

The 12th-overall pick by the Rangers in the 2005 NHL draft, Staal played in 1,136 regular season contests with the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers.

He reached the Stanley Cup final with the Rangers in 2014 and the Panthers in 2023, but lost to the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights respectively.

Marc's older brother Eric announced his retirement on July 30 after signing a one-day contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
