THUNDER BAY — The Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s hockey team will have one of their own competing overseas to start off 2025.

Forward Malte Hasselgren will be suiting up for Sweden at the FISU World University Games, which run from Jan. 13-23 in Turin, Italy.

Hasselgren, who turned 22 last week, is in his first season with the Thunderwolves after playing professionally in Finland in 2023-24.

He’s currently tied for eighth in team scoring with seven points – three goals and four assists – in 15 games.

Hasselgren is the first Thunderwolves player to compete at the event since Jordan Smith and Matt Caria won bronze medals for Canada in 2011.

The World University Games are held every two years. Canada are the defending men’s hockey champions.
