Women’s Baseball World Cup opens with a forfeit

Venezuela forfeited their Sunday morning matchup with the United States due to a lack of players as a result of travel logistics issues.

THUNDER BAY – The 2024 World Baseball Softball Confederation Women’s Baseball World Cup got off to an odd start Sunday morning at Port Arthur Stadium.

As a result of severe travel logistics issues, Venezuela was unable to field a full lineup for their contest against the United States.

The tournament’s technical committee forfeited the contest as a result and awarded the win to the Americans.

In a prepared statement, the WBSC said that they are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide an update on any schedule changes if they are needed.

Venezuela is slated to return to action at 11 a.m. Monday against Chinese Taipei.

The rest of Sunday’s schedule remains the same.

Japan faces Chinese Taipei at 2 p.m. and Canada takes on Mexico at 7:30 p.m.

The opening ceremonies for the tournament are set for 5:30 p.m.
