For more than 30 years, Manroc Developments has provided exceptional underground mining services across Canada and overseas.
Manroc was started in 1986 by Manroc’s current vice-president and co-owner Katie Simoneau’s father. Simoneau officially bought the company in 2014 with her business partner and Manroc president, Chris Sproule.
The company which initially started off with nine employees now has up to 250 employees. It is headquartered in northwestern Ontario with offices in Manitouwadge and Thunder Bay. Manroc specializes in Alimak raise development, underground lateral development, longhole stope production drilling, blasting and underground construction.
“Manroc is known worldwide for our Alimak program,” Simoneau says, adding it’s a specialized program using modified and fabricated in house equipment. We are also known worldwide for our The Alimak Stope mining method, which provides high safety standards while increasing productivity and reducing overall mining costs when applied to the appropriate ore bodies.
The northwestern Ontario mining company not only serves most of the operating mines in the region but is also known for leading and supporting a number of international projects.
The company also offers a wide range of employment opportunities underground. There are several positions offered at Manroc including but not limited to truck operators, scoop operators supervisors, development miners, Alimak miners and mechanics. Manroc also offers positions at their offices and shops in payroll, accounts payable, human resources, safety, mechanical and more.
And for some positions, like underground skilled miners and mechanics, relocation isn’t required, Simoneau says.
“It usually doesn’t matter where someone lives because we book them a plane ticket and they fly to the nearest airport where the job site is,” Simoneau says. “Miners can live where they choose because relocation is not really a necessity since we bring them to where the work is.”
Although the company has significantly grown over the last three decades, the company still carries a family-based atmosphere, Simoneau explains.
“We are a very tight group, so there are long histories here for sure,” she says, adding the company’s office and shop staff typically stay with Manroc throughout their careers.
“In some cases, we have the whole families working for us – mom, dad and the kids or husband and wife teams.”
