Answering the common questions about plug-in hybrid vehicles

screenshot-18

Everyone has heard a lot about them, yet there are still so many questions remaining. Hybrid and fully electric vehicles are coming to a dealership near you.

Here is a brief Q&A below to answer some of those questions that one might have.

Why should I buy a plug-in hybrid? What are the differences between a plug-in hybrid to a full-on electric vehicle or gas-powered vehicle?

A plug-in hybrid gives you the best of both worlds.  Our plug-in hybrid allows you to drive a shorter range in electric and then switches over to gas for longer drives such as trips.

For most people our Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will do all of their daily driving in electric and if you are travelling longer distances, the vehicle will then convert to using the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine).

This way you can easily fill up at any gas station and don’t need to worry about finding a charging station to charge and slow your trip down considerably.

What are the benefits associated with a plug-in hybrid, not just for the environment, but for the owner?

There are huge savings to be had on fuel cost.  The benefits vary on your driving habits, however, it is estimated that for an “average” driver your fuel consumption could decrease as much as 60-70 per cent.  Not only does that make for a substantial savings in fuel but also a much quieter, smoother ride.

What’s the range I can get in regards for mileage?

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is rated for 61 kilometres of pure electric driving.  After that it converts to gas. The total range for Gas & Electric is estimated at 687 km.

What are the maintenance costs compared to a full-on electric or a gas-powered vehicle?

Maintenance costs are similar to that of a regular gas-powered vehicle.

Do I need any special charging equipment for this vehicle?

One of the great things about the Outlander PHEV is that you do not need any special charging equipment.  The vehicle comes with a charging cable that plugs in to most regular outlets in North America.

Charging a completely empty drive battery takes around 15 to 16 hours.  You could get a Level 2 charger installed which would cut the charging time down to six-and-half hours.  Most charging stations out in the public are Level 2 chargers.

I’ve heard horror stories of replacement batteries costing anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 dollars for Electric vehicles.  How does this one compare?

Another great thing about the Outlander PHEV is that Mitsubishi covers the drive battery under the Powertrain Warranty, this gives you drive battery coverage for 10 years and up to 160,000 km’s.

Are there any Government Rebates available when purchasing a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in Ontario?

Yes, currently the federal government is offering a $5,000 Government rebate.  We are applying that Rebate at the dealership and take care of all of the paperwork with regards to that.

If I need further information, who’s the best person to contact?

Our sales staff is well trained and can speak in length to anyone considering a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.  You can call us at 807-345-8080 or stop by the dealership at 872 Copper Crescent to see one in person.
