If you are a member of Nishnawbe-Aski Nation, and have been the victim or witness of a crime, Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services has resources to help.

Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services listens, encourages and empowers clients in a non intrusive manner.

Support, information, referrals and liaison services are offered by NAN Legal Services.

Victim Witness Liaison Referral Form’s can be filled out on the website, at this link.

Referrals can come from a number of sources including:

  • Community Resources
  • Counselling Agencies
  • Shelters
  • Child and Family Services
  • Crown Attorney’s Office
  • Police Investigator or Detective
  • Restorative Justice Program
  • Talking Together Program

NAN Legal is here to provide emotional and practical support, and remind individuals they’re not alone.

The Victim Witness Liaison Program (VWLP) provide practical and emotional support before, during and after court trials. They provide court accompaniment as well as assistance for those who wish to disclose historical harm.              

Some of the goals & objectives of the VWLP regarding victims and witnesses of crime are to:

  • Ensure immediate needs are met following an incident where harm is done
  • Assist with safety planning
  • Educate on court procedures and what to expect as matters proceed
  • Provide accompaniment and support during court preparations and proceedings
  • Coordinate meetings with the Crown Attorney
  • Provide updates on court dates, dispositions, and case status
  • Assist in preparing a Victim Impact Statement (VIS)
  • Provide information on community resources such as counselling agencies or shelters that could provide additional support
