For the last two decades, Paula Adams has worked in Thunder Bay in the mental health and addictions field.

The masters level social worker and psychotherapist runs Paula Adams Counselling Services, where she works with individuals of all ages who are suffering with challenges such as past trauma, anxiety and depression, grief, low self-worth, and relationship issues.

“One of the main areas that I work in is with helping people process difficult events in their lives,” Adams said.

“I use a therapy called EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) that’s really good for helping people process trauma. It also helps to treat most of the struggles that we suffer with as humans, such as anxiety or depression.”

Adams also likes to do skill building for mindfulness and self-compassion to help people be kinder to themselves.

“I find that to be very helpful in my own personal life and I’ve generally incorporated that into my practice as well,” Adams said.

“I also use another type of framework, a therapy called Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, that helps people in developing more mindfulness in their lives as a way of coping, thriving and learning about how to regulate emotions and allow emotional experiencing.”

Adams’ practice is in a comfortable private space and is in an atmosphere that is filled with compassion and unconditional positive regard.

“It takes a lot of courage to reach out for therapy,” Adams said.

“Sometimes people meet with a therapist and it doesn’t go well . . . and then they’ll kind of write off that area of support for themselves, which is unfortunate.”

For anyone who is considering counselling, Adams offers a free 15-minute consultation.
