Waddington and Pottinger Law LLP: Changing the Face of Legal Services in Thunder Bay

Inclusivity is not just a guiding principle at W&P Law—it’s the heart of their firm.

Waddington and Pottinger Law LLP (W&P Law) opened in May 2023, they made history as Thunder Bay’s only all-female law firm. From the start, their goal has been to deliver legal services in a new, more personal way.

Focusing on Family and Estate law, W&P Law has taken a fresh approach to legal work. Instead of the traditional intimidating or impersonal style, they are leading with compassion, approachability, and inclusivity. Their modern take on law combines professionalism with empathy, helping clients through some of the most challenging times of their lives – the end of a relationship, or the loss of a loved one.

The welcoming feel of their office sets them apart from the moment you walk through the door. It’s fully accessible, has a stocked changing table for parents, and even offers toys for children. The space feels warm and open, with a colourful boardroom and Indigenous art on display. No matter your gender, background, or situation, W&P Law offers a safe and supportive environment. Many clients express that, for the first time, they feel truly seen and heard. For individuals navigating emotionally charged matters, this kind of care makes all the difference.

With over 25 years of combined experience in the legal field, the founding partners are all too familiar with the challenges and inequalities faced by women and minorities in legal spaces. They have made it their mission to mentor and support young women who want to pursue careers in law and can often be found promoting legal education and even lecturing at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, when time permits.

As the firm grew, W&P Law added more strong female advocates. In January 2024, Katherine Lambert, a certified family mediator and parenting coordinator, came on board. Most recently, Cady Dreger, a new graduate from the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, became an associate. W&P Law has also built a network of diverse professionals in other fields to support their team, and in doing so are creating pathways for the next generation of leaders in the Northern Ontario legal community.

Inclusivity is not just a guiding principle at W&P Law—it’s the heart of their firm. By working closely with the community, they are transforming how legal services are provided, one case at a time. Their motto sums it up perfectly: “If it matters to you. If it matters to your family. Then it matters to us"
