THUNDER BAY – Off and on rain showers didn’t put a damper on those participating in the Ronald McDonald House Charity Golf Tournament at Fort William Country Club on Friday.
After all, the conditions were far better than what had happened during the last two editions of the event.
“We were washed out both years and I’ve learned that there’s more than one weather app out there,” said Chris Holland, who is the chair for the tournament. “I’ve checked every one of the apps and every one is a little different with their forecast.
“We’ve had a little bit of rain, but that’s no big deal compared to what’s happened in the past, so it is all good.”
A total of 144 golfers took part in the tournament, which raised funds for the Ronald McDonald Houses in Toronto and London.
Those locations are where most children and families from Northwestern Ontario go when receiving medical treatment.
“If you’re away from home for a month or two months, it’s a place away from home for that time,” Holland said.
The final totals from this year’s tournament were still being tabulated at press time, but the organizing committee’s goal is to surpass the $110,000 that was raised in 2023.
“This community is amazing,” Holland said. “There are people that respond to us within seconds when we send our first email out to tell them about the tournament each year.
“We have a great committee as well. There are so many diverse people with different backgrounds who work really hard to help us bring in so much money each year. It’s been great to work with them.”
Those that weren’t able to take part in the tournament – which has a waiting list each year – can still lend their support to the Ronald McDonald House.
A 50/50 draw is being held at 11 a.m. Saturday and anyone in Ontario can purchase a ticket.
The deadline to order a ticket, which can be done online, is at 11:59 p.m. Friday.
