Confederation College's film festival is back

Confederation college will present more than 30 short films created by second year students in the film production program on Saturday

THUNDER BAY — Confederation College will be holding its annual Conflix Film Night on Saturday.

The festival begins a 7 p.m. and showcases short films created by second year students in the Film Production program.

“Our students have been working hard all year long on their second year of films, so this is their major thesis film. Tonight we've got action and adventure and romance and science fiction – you name it, and it's on the big screen,” said Eric Weller coordinator of the film production program.

Weller said there are about 31 films mixed together.

“If you don't like something, just wait five minutes, something different is going to come up.”

This is a culmination of dreams coming true, Weller said.

“In second year, they just work on their second year films. They've been planning, they've been writing it, rehearsing, and getting all the shots ready . . . and then finally directing and editing and colour grading and everything. Tremendous amount of work,” he said.

Admission for film night is free and always will be, Weller said.

“We really hope that the community comes out and supports our students here on film night in the same way that the people of Thunder Bay help our students with the shooting of their films.

“The folks in Thunder Bay have always been very generous with their homes and their businesses allowing us to shoot, to get great locations and that sort of thing,” he said.

Danish Choughule, second year film student at Confederation College, will be presenting the short film Crave which is about a chef.

“It's about what goes on in everyday life.

“Everyone goes through some stuff, but eventually you have to come out and achieve your goals. The theme of the story is, it’s never too late to start over, and the story is just about that,” he said.

Choughule said he couldn’t have done this without his batchmates, crew and all of the professors who helped every step of the way.

“Whatever locations we need around the city, everyone was too kind. Kind enough to get us the location, and yeah, it was fun shooting the movie,” he said.

Choughule said he really wants to get into more camera work.

“I love cinematography and I'm hoping to get into projects, shoot movies, and that's something that I'm looking forward to after college,” he said.

Liam Beaulne, second year film student at Confederation College, will be presenting his film The Fixer Upper.

“The Fixer Upper is about an old man who works at a hardware store. He fixes everyone's problems in the town, and this lady comes in and she kind of gets a crush on the old man. She runs out of things for her to get fixed so she (has to) figure something out,” Beaulne said.

The Fixer Upper is a rom-com, he added.

“I've liked assistant directing and helping plan and figure out the logistics of all the filmmaking, so I think that's something I look forward to doing more,” he said.

The Short Film Festival starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, in the Dibaajimogamig Lecture Theatre, and it is recommended to go early because it is a first come first served basis.
