THUNDER BAY — In the middle of their busy exam schedule, female law students at Lakehead University are giving back to Thunder Bay.

The school’s Women in Law club is running its Fill a Bag campaign for the second straight year as they are accepting donations for care bags that will be given to the Thunder Bay Community Clothing Assistance Centre.

“We filled the trunk of my SUV with our donations last year, so that kind of led to us wanting to do this again this year,” club co-president Jessica Hayes said.

“That showed what the students at our school stand for and what the law students also stand for, which is about giving to the ones that are around us,” club co-president Chandeni Narain added.

“It was a great turnout last year and we’re expecting the same, if not more donations from this year’s campaign. We actually have to get a bigger donation box because it’s already overflowing.”

This year’s campaign started on Nov. 25 and runs through Dec. 18.

Among the items that are needed are menstrual products (pads, tampons, diva cups, etc.), deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, tissues, lip balm, mitts, gloves, tuques, clothing, hairbrushes and safety whistles.

The Women in Law Club is accepting individual bags/purses and items that they can put together for a complete care bag. There are also pre-filled purses for a donation.

“We don’t want to limit people in terms of what they can donate though,” Narain said. “We don’t want to turn anyone away just because they might have something that isn’t listed in our poster.”

Hayes said that the Thunder Bay Community Clothing Assistance Centre has been chosen as the recipient of the donations for the work they do in the community.

Students can make a donation Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the student lounge at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law on 401 Red River Road.

The general public can arrange to make a donation by contacting the Women in Law club via e-mail
