THUNDER BAY – There’s been a slight change to the course that runners and walkers will be travelling on for the 2024 edition of the Terry Fox Run.
Having previously started in front of St. Ignatius High School before doing a route around Boulevard Lake, this year’s run will now begin at the Current River Recreation Centre.
The path still goes along Boulevard Lake, but will now be on the east side with an out-and-back route over the course of five kilometres.
“We changed it largely due to some policing costs,” said Don Morrison, who is the chairperson for the Terry Fox Run in Thunder Bay.
“We did look at a couple of other places, but the Salvation Army runs their Santa Shuffle, which is also a five-kilometre run, in December using the route that we’ve adopted.
“They’ve had success with it and I was able to work with them to get an idea of the start and end lines and how the turnarounds work. That made things a lot easier for us.”
This year marks the 43rd edition of the Terry Fox Run in Thunder Bay.
The format is the same as it’s been in the past with a relaxed non-competitive environment.
“Don’t forget, Terry’s run stopped here in Thunder Bay so it’s always important that we have the run here, which we’ve done except for COVID,” Morrison said.
“Thunder Bay always comes out and supports the run. It’s a well-attended and well-supported event and we expect more of the same this year.”
Registration can be done in person at 1 p.m. on Sunday or in advance online. The run itself starts at 2 p.m.
Last year’s run raised over $40,000 through the event and with runs that are held at local schools.
“I think we’re closing up to close $700,000 that’s been raised over the last four decades,” Morrison said.
