THUNDER BAY – Lakehead Public Schools has issued a letter to parents and guardians telling them, for now, to be prepared to send students back to the classroom following the Christmas break.
The letter, signed by director of education Ian MacRae, says the only direction they’ve been given by both education and health authorities is to plan for a return to in-person learning.
However MacRae doesn’t rule out a return to virtual learning.
“You may recall that last year, a provincial decision to move to virtual learning was made after the winter break had started. Given the rising case counts in the province, especially among school-aged children, it is reasonable to expect that a similar decision could be made in the coming days,” MacRae writes in the letter.
“We wish to reassure you that should there be any changes to programming in January, we are prepared to manage it efficiently and effectively.”
The board told parents to follow public health guidelines surrounding shopping and travel and to monitor its communications channels for updates.
“We recognize that families will need time to make arrangements if there is a pivot to virtual learning, and we are committed to communicating that information to you as soon as it is made available to us. You can expect details about schedules and timelines, access to technology, as well as resources to help support families with the transition,” MacRae said.
