SAULT STE. MARIE – Trevor Bonot opened the Northern Ontario provincial curling play-downs with a 9-5 win over Dylan Johnston.

Bonot scored deuces in the first, fourth and ninth ends to keep pace with tournament favourite Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, who downed the Joshua Szajewski foursome 12-2 on Thursday, the opening day of the four-day event.

The championship was initially scheduled for Kenora, but was pushed back because of COVID-19 restrictions and later moved.

Sudbury’s Sandy McEwan was also victorious on Day 1, downing Chris Gilbota’s rink 10-2.

Bonot takes on Jacobs on Friday morning, while Johnston plays McEwan.
