THUNDER BAY — The Royal Canadian Legion and Ladies Auxiliary of Port Arthur Branch 5 made donations to seven community organizations in Thunder Bay over the holidays.
The Ladies Auxiliary donated $1500 to the Dayna Elizabeth Karle Addiction Recovery Foundation, also known as the DEK Foundation.
It also gathered a hamper of food along with a cheque of $3000 to donate to the Regional Food Distribution Association.
However, one of the main fundraising events for the Ladies Auxiliary is assisting at the Superior Shores Bingo Hall, where a portion of the funds raised at the hall will return to the Ladies Auxiliary to be donated back into the community.
The Ladies Auxiliary further donated $1000 to the Parade of Lights.
It is always a great feeling to be able to support community organizations in Thunder Bay, especially around Christmas, mentioned President Lois Foster of the Ladies Auxiliary.
Together, the Royal Canadian Legion joined the Ladies Auxiliary to present $1100 to the Thunder Bay Professional Fire Fighters Association’s (TBPFFA) Toys for Tots 2024 Campaign.
The TBPFFA said it was very grateful to organizations such as the Royal Canadian Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary of Port Arthur Branch 5 for their considerable donations year after year.
It said without these contributions, as well as the people of Thunder Bay, it would not be able to do what it does and helping children in the community ‘is what it all comes down to.”
Port Arthur Branch 5 also presented a $2500 cheque from the Poppy Trust Fund to the 2294 and 2511 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps at their Christmas Mess Dinner on Dec. 19.
The Poppy Trust Fund are funds collected yearly through the Poppy Campaign in November and later donated to worthy organizations in Thunder Bay to ensure that Veterans and their families are cared for and treated with the respect that they deserve, described George Romick, the first Vice President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 5.
These Funds also support the local Army, Sea or Air Cadets and Navy League Cadets.
The branch said it has always been very supportive of these Cadet Corps in Thunder Bay.
Port Arthur Branch 5 presented another $4000 cheque from the Poppy Trust Fund to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation to purchase a HugAire Blanket Warmer Cabinet, which the Post Coronary Intervention Unit patients will use.
Branch 5 finally presented a $10,000 cheque from the Poppy Trust Fund to the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Thunder Bay to purchase a Bolero Bath Lift, which the patients at Bethammi Nursing Home will use.
It said both purchases are ‘certain to be appreciated by all.’
