SIOUX LOOKOUT — The Ontario Liberal Party has chosen Manuela Michelizzi to run for them in the upcoming provincial election.

In a press release issued by the party, Michelizzi is described as being an educator, an executive member of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association’s northwest unit, a community volunteer and advocate and a mother of two.

Her LinkedIn page says she’s currently an acting vice principal with the Northwest Catholic District School Board in Sioux Lookout. Prior to her current role, she was a public school teacher for nearly 15 years.

“I am dedicated to making northern voices heard and striving to improve our access to health care and mental health services, restoring our world-class education system, finding solutions to the housing crisis and making living in the north more affordable for families and those just starting out,” she was quoted as saying in the party’s press release.

Michelizzi was born in Thunder Bay and has a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University.

She ran for the Liberals in Kiitwetinoong in 2022, garnering just under six per cent of the vote.

This time, she's running against NDP incumbent Sol Mamakwa, Waylon Scott for the Progressive Conservatives, the Greens' Carolyn Spicer and Theresa Leppich for the Northern Ontario Party.

Election day is Feb. 27.
