WABASEEMOONG — The Progressive Conservatives have chosen a First Nation chief from Northwestern Ontario to run for the party in Kiiwetinoong.

Waylon Scott, the chief of Wabaseemoong Independent Nations, will carry the PC banner in the Feb. 27 provincial election.

Scott was elected chief of Wabaseemoong in 2019; he also currently serves on the board of the Kenora Chiefs Advisory, an alliance of area First Nations that provides health, education and other social services to its communities.

The KCA recently acquired land in Kenora for the All Nations Hospital — a planned 81-bed hospital in the community being led by the advisory and the Lake of the Woods District Hospital — as well as a new 160-bed Wigwas Elder and Senior Care facility.

Scott and the KCA are also part of the partnership behind bringing a Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hub to Kenora.

Kiiwetinoong is the largest riding by area in Ontario at nearly 300,000 square kilometres.

He joins NDP incumbent Sol Mamakwa, Liberal candidate Manuela Michelizzi, the Greens' Carolyn Spicer and Theresa Leppich for the Northern Ontario Party in the riding’s race.
