South end boat launch to close for renewal

The boat launch and the park area will be closed to the public as the work begins.

THUNDER BAY – The Mountdale Boat Launch is scheduled to close for improvements starting June 3.

The boat launch and the park area will be closed to the public as the work begins, with completion expected by Sept. 30 depending on the weather.

The City of Thunder Bay thanked users for their patience during this closure.

Improvements at the Mountdale Boat Launch include paving the parking area, with dedicated spots for vehicles with boat trailers as well as the addition of an accessible pedestrian trail leading to the viewing platform.

Two low-impact developments will be installed, using vegetation to catch and filter water before it enters the Kaministiquia River.

Along with improvements to the existing swales, this will assist with stormwater management and drainage in the parking area.

The upgrades are based on feedback from public consultation carried out by the city and Lakehead Region Conservation Area in 2021 and 2022.

Improvements to the dock, viewing platform, and boat launch were identified in that process and will be addressed in the future as funding becomes available.

The Mission Boat Launch is open to the public on 107th Avenue on Mission Island.
